John Westbrook
Interests: Ancient Philosophy, Christian Metaphysics, Ethics, History of Philosophy and Modern Philosophy especially Descartes.
Dissertation Topic: My dissertation argues that Descartes’ Discourse on Method should be read as an autobiographical philosophical proto-bildungsroman that traces his intellectual, spiritual, and psychological development. Focusing on his analytic (method of discovery) and synthetic (method of demonstration) methodologies, this interpretation explains the work’s apparent inconsistencies by showing how Descartes’ arguments concerning the soul, God, and scientific knowledge form stages within a unified narrative of philosophical maturation grounded in discovery rather than demonstration.
